Find of the Month (February 2000). (Revisited 2008)
L'Auberge de la Croisade, on the Canal du Midi, near Cruzy, Herault. 2000: Enjoy visiting this magnificent and friendly establishment on the beautiful banks of the Canal du Midi, whether you are coming by car or boat. Bruno the host, speaks English, so you can leave your french to manage the mouthwatering menu. This is the place to visit if you want to celebrate the joys of dining from a host with the highest gastronomic standards (having worked at Claridges, Dorchester in London amongst other places) 2008: It is sad to think that though the dining is still good, that standards seem to have fallen. The plates seem to be bloated, overcooked, without enough attention to the freshness of the vegetables. The usage of sauces, often heavy, destroy the individual characteristics of various tastes. The management needs to do a serious rethink about refreshing their image. Its easy to depend on regular traffic, without trying out new dishes. What worked in the past however may not work for an ever discerning clientele in the future. It was also surprising that children don't seem to be welcome, as the kitchen and the menu does not welcome child friendly basic menus. It is a god send that the location is beautiful and on the canal, where it gives room for children to roam (though the canal has its safety concerns).
