COME TO CARCASSONNE

Carcassonne truly is the gem of Languedoc, with not one but two towns to interest the traveller. The well known old cité of Carcassonne with its huge medieval walls, 52 towers,old village streets with a myriad of restaurants, galleries, shops, cafés as well as a number of museums, cathedral to take in is a magnet to one and all. It is wonderful to visit in the summer months, especially for the fireworks on Bastille Day, and the concerts and entertainments from international music stars in the weeks that come before and after. It is also great to visit off season, in the cooler months, where one gets a calmer and some ways more realistic view of the medieval ways, when there was no such thing as central heating!

The lower town of Carcassonne, La Ville Basse, is also a treasure trove to discover. With its Musée des Beaux-Arts, and the unique Maison des Memoires celebrating local surrealist poet Joe Bousquet; as well as architectural gems, and the lively market in the broad place Carnot.

Carcassonne is indeed the base to discover the richness of Languedoc. Just a half an hour or so south is Limoux, known world wide for its sparkling white wine, who secret was taken to found the better known Champagnes of the north. Also to the south east are the magnificent, green, craggy hills and mountains of the Corbieres, deeply encrusted with abbeys (Lagrasse), mountaintop and extreme castles known for their Cathar history (Peyrepertuse, Queribus, Arques). To the north and north east- the Minervois and La Liviniere you can wander through hilltops and gorges, and savour not only the wild scents of thyme, but also potent and prestigious wines. Along east and west runs the world heritage awarded engineering feat - the Canal du Midi, busy at times with canal boats, and pleasure cruises. And to one's surprise - the beaches of the Mediterranean, golden and sandy are just 45 minutes drive at Betty Blue's Gruissan Plage, and the water pleasure spots of Leucate Plage, and La Franqui.

Carcassonne is then an ideal base to discover the delights of Languedoc. Carcassonne's airport has frequent flights with Ryanair to Bournemouth, Brussels, Cork, Dublin, East Midlands (Nottingham), Edinburgh, Frankfurt Hahn, Leeds, Liverpool, London Stanstead, Shannon. If you prefer rail travel their are fast TGV lines that slow down as they approach Carcassonne, but are connected to rails that zing and zoom! at Toulouse, Montpellier, and Barcelona.
