PLACES ON YOUR CRUISE:

AIGUILLON : The word Aiguillon comes from the point (aculeus in Latin) formed by the confluence of the Lot and the Garonne. The grand chateau built by the Duke of Aiguillon in 1775-81 is now a College, whose majestic facade looks out over the Garonne valley. To the right of the chateau and church is the medieval district of Lunac, which contains timber-frame houses and a castle whose roof and towers can be seen from the Place Lunac.
CLAIRAC : Where the Benectines at the abbey pioneered the agriculture of tobacco and prunes. Museum. Has fine 17th and 18th century houses. Was a protestant stronghold where Louis XIII laid seige and slaughtered 90% of the protestant population.
LAPARADE : Village of half timbered houses, a bastide, ramparts, overlook the valley at a height of 190m.
GRANGES SUR LOT : Romanesque church with some notable features. Village suffered during the 100 years war. Lovely walk along the river.

Now centre of prune and plum industry, Has become a multicultural home to Italians fleeing Mussolini, Spaniards fleeing Franco, Portuguese fleeing from Salazar, repatriated soldiers from Indochina, Algerians, as well as migrant workers from the Maghreb, English and Dutch tourists.
CASSENEUIL : Pretty Lot village, with 13th century but also baroque church. Squeezed at the confluence of 3 rivers (Lot, Lede, Sone), it is now at the centre of the plum prune region. The village has half timbered houses and castle. The river banks have a number of water mills. The Cathar crusade, began here, with a number of Cathar priests burnt at the stake.
VILLENEUVE SUR LOT : Popular market town, with bastide, with 13th century old bridge over river Lot. Musee de Gaujac. Culture center. Red bricked tower of church 14th century to present day.
PENNE D'AGENAIS : Pretty 11th century castle and fortified village on cliff edge above river Lot. Once fortified by Richard the Lionheart. Shops, galleries, restaurants.
SAINT SYVESTRE SUR LOT : Popular market town, with good market, 19th century church on river bank, and restaurants.
LUSTRAC : 13th century watermill castle. Pretty on side of Lot, where its military arm was concerned with charging a toll on traffic along the river.
