Bijou is a baronial apartment in a noted architectural building dating
from 1805. Originally, the entire building was the huge private-home
of noted
financier - Antoine Plauche. Then it became a prestigious Banque de France.
More recently it was renovated into six large and elegant apartments
on three floors.

Unique features were designed into the building including:
* An Automated Central Ventilation control in the kitchen, the 2 bathrooms and WC.
* All connecting rooms have re-fitted original 200 year old, very-tall, double doors. All open fully for maximum traffic-flow.
* It is the only residential building in Pezenas with a Lift (elevator) !
DETAILS OF ACCOMMODATION
The Bijou Apartment is located on the 1st floor and is accessed either by lift or by a wide staircase from the entrance foyer.
The apartment comprises:
* Entrance Foyer with large guest closet, wood doors, wide hallways, tile floors, electric wall-heaters throughout (total comfort all year round)

* 2 Bedrooms - each with large built-in closets. One bedroom has a Queen-Size bed (Simmons Supreme) and the other with oversize twin beds, when pushed together equal a King-size bed
.
* 2 Bathrooms - one with a bath/shower and the other with shower.
* A separate WC.
* Spacious Kitchen with Butler Pantry, table and 4 chairs, full stove, fridge, microwave, washing machine, toaster etc. The floor is white tiled and highly polished.
* The Great Room with sofa, chairs, high-chest, (Danish, Malaysian & Portuguese), dining table with extension and 4 chairs (Louis XVI copy), white tile floor, highly polished, marble fireplace (closed), telephone (Local Calls), TV/Radio/CD and DVD player. A selection of area Guide Books is available for guests use in the Portuguese chest.
* Terrace with big outdoor table and 4 chairs.
Bijou is a one-level, flat-floor apartment - except for the rain-sill to the big terrace off the kitchen - without any narrow stairs or doorways.
On the large out-door terrace (14 x 16 ft.) you may enjoy all your meals if you wish - or just lounge and enjoy the 300 + days of sunshine for which Pezenas is famous.
The ceilings are really high. At 3.8 Meters (12 3/4 ft), the airiness of this very spacious apartment is greatly enhanced. Even the two arched windows in the Living Room, plus another in the kitchen are 3 Meters (10 ft) tall, and provide sweeping sunlight as well as cooling breezes in this delightfully large apartment. Marie-France stands on tiptoe - with broom in hand - and still cannot reach that elusive spider-web she sees in the ceiling-corner!
The opposite side (rear-windows in the bedrooms) have no view restriction. You are looking out across the tops of the tiled roofs of Pezenas. (Nobody to peek back at you!).
The added new modern bath-room fixtures make both bathrooms light and bright. Plus a 200 Litre Hot-water tank in the Butler Pantry providing plenty of hot water.
There is a wrought-iron balcony that runs the length of the apartment which overlooks the street below. The street is closed (people traffic only) for the Saturday Market-Day on Rue Jean Jaures.
As a luxury building - the fresh-air filtration system works from a motor on the roof. Exhaust air-ducts waft out cooking odours and bathroom towels dry themselves on their towel-racks, eliminating that damp feel of older houses.
Bijou also has windows/doors on three sides. Everybody is looking for these difficult-to-find air traversant houses with their refreshing cross ventilation. Most are just forward facing. It is Bijou’s special window arrangement which offer these spectacular evening cross-breezes which freshen the apartment for your cool, restful comfort and sleep.
The conceptual interior decor is focused on the Marble Fireplace (closed) to reflect comfort and simplicity. Interior design is - overall - a personal preference and reflects the owners expression of this appreciation of functional comfort - which they are most happy to share with you.
Bijou is really a large four bedroom apartment. And you will see that the associated other rooms - are scaled accordingly - to reflect this considerable size. It is the two larger bedrooms which are open for your sleeping comfort. Item #11 on the Bijou diagram is CLOSED (linen bureau and Laundry) - and item #15 has become the PETITE SALLE for your comfort and enjoyment.

| LOCATION Just a 5 minutes walk from the apartment and you will find 32 restaurants (at last count), 7 Boulangeries, 8 Coiffeurs (for the ladies), plus all the old town shops. The Pezenas Swimming Pool is only a short stroll away, as is the Pezenas CyberCafe ( 5 minute walk); a great convenience for those who may like to keep that EMAIL connection with Home. The Parc Sans Souci with its pleasant paths and green grass with a few ducks on the shadowed pond and the Amphitheatre, home for the Pezenas Summer Theater (Troupe Mirondela del Arte for 36 years now) are both also only 5 minutes from the apartment. Carrefour (Walmart look-alike) is now in town, just an easy 7 minute walk along a lovely totally tree-lined tarmac. And of course, there is Pezenas itself. The Michelin brochure 'Les Plus Beaux Detours de France' calls Pezenas a "Not-to- miss" town. It is alive all year around; not only a summer city. Flies and Mosquitoes are truly minimal (if any). None of these petit betes to disturb or annoy you - day-or-night. Open the doors. Open the windows. A natural breath of fresh air. |

The town is situated on the River Peyne and has a population of about 7,000. As each summer begins - Pezenas paints her face with special care and in courtly robes assumes her role as the Doyenne of Culture - in this place of Moliere.
For 36 seasons, the Mirondela de l'Arte has descended on the city with its music, its energy, its excitement - to remain En Residence in Pezenas for the summer - offering you musical spectacles, theatre and endless street animation. When you walk over into the old-city, you cannot help but feel the pulse of life from a bygone time.

Pezenas is cited by the Official Preservation Registry as a Ville de Metier d’Art for its widely varied family of artisans - createurs and antique restoration craftsmen. A known centre of the Antique Trade and for its Bric-a-brac . The Cultural Walking Tours start at Place Gambetta - then through the XVI-XVII century city streets of old Pezenas. Old-fashioned cafes in a city virtually untouched by the drive of modern development. And all because the French Rail Road made a decision many-many years ago to BYPASS the city ! Pezenas truly offers a different holiday.
From Pezenas – it’s fun to visit the beach at Cap d’Agde for its many activity-attractions, the pulsing electric-music and excitement. But then - it is also nice to be able to be able to retreat to the more measured couth of Bijou.
Pezenas is between Montpellier (with its museum and university cosmopolitan lifestyle) and Bezier (renowned for its Feria in August, as well as its flower markets). To the east are the seemingly endless beaches of the Mediterranean from Sete to Marseillan Plage to Cap d’Agde (20-25 minutes). To the north and west, within easy reach, are the hills of St.Chinian, Faugeres and Minervois - all regions known for their excellent wine.
ACCESS
The Apartment is conveniently located just 20 minutes to the Mediterranean, 8 minutes to the Coastal Highway to Spain (A-9 ) and 35 to Montpellier Airport (Air France/British Airways/RyanAir). The short drive from the airport is so much appreciated after a long flight..!
There is almost an hourly day-time Bus Service from Monpellier to Pezenas and 3 1/2 hours by TGV will get you to Paris from Montpellier.
Carcassonne (medieval walled city) is the second-most-visited-city-in-France. Only 1 to 1 1/2 hours by car. You will surely be spoilt for choice on what to see and do on this holiday!
A note from the owners...
Upon arrival, please - take a few minutes. Open the Inside-Shutters. Step out onto the long balcony and look down into the street. All trees to the left - all the way to Carrefour grocery.
Then - cross over to the bedrooms at the rear of the property for the great view across the old -fashioned tile roofs of Pezenas - without any view restrictions.
Out onto the terrace - check the vines, the plants - turn your face South to the sun - and you will understand why we believe this exceptional apartment will delight you.
None of the make do - or - hand-me-downs, Bijou has been furnished as our home - not as a rental - with a focus on taste and simplicity - with no surrender to eclectic furnishings.
With so much convenience inside - with so much convenience outside - within walking proximity of everything you could need there is no daily need for a car - unless you want to. It’s fun. It’s great. It’s comfortable.
